Looking to earn a little extra money? Forget dog walking and babysitting – why not consider donating your poo?
Yes, you read that correctly. According to an exclusive report in the Daily Telegraph, the Centre for Digestive Disease is short on the material they need for Faecal Microbiota Transfers (FMT), more crudely referred to as poo transplants. FMT works by restoring the good bacteria in the bowel through the infusion of stool from a healthy donor. It’s an experimental method being trialled to help treat gastrointestinal diseases like colitis and irritable bowel syndrome, as well as other medical conditions like autism and multiple sclerosis.
Donors make $50 per drop off and as much as $250 per week, but there’s a few conditions. You’ll need to fill out a form, have your blood tested, provide three stool tests and be interviewed about your health in order to determine whether you’re right for the job.
You will need to be a healthy weight and eat foods including fresh vegetables, pulses and fruit plus wholemeal bread and pasta. Donors will need to exclude corn, shellfish, prawns, oysters, salami, ham, sausages and antibiotics from their diet. When you’ve been given the tick of approval, you will need to take supplements including apple pectin, Inulin and N-acetylglucosamine to promote good bacteria in your bowel.
Your location is also a deal breaker. Donors must live within an hour of he Centre for Digestive Diseases at Five Dock, in Sydney’s inner west, as the sample needs to be delivered within a couple of hours of deployment.
Better your sh*t together and sign up.
