Cancer symptoms: Five signs in the face that could signal the life-threatening disease

Cancer is a condition where cells in the body grow in an uncontrolled way and spread to other tissues, damaging them. One of the biggest problems is recognising symptoms as often they’re mistaken for less serious conditions. But with there currently being no cure, spotting the signs as early as possible is very important. Looking at one part of the body, the face, Cancer Research UK lists five less well-known signs for you to be wary of.

With there currently being no cure, spotting the symptoms of cancer as early as possible is very important

Unexplained pain or ache

Pain is one way our bodies tell us something is wrong, says the cancer charity.

It adds: “As we get older, it’s more common to experience aches and pains. But if you have unexplained, ongoing pain, or pain that comes and goes, make an appointment to see your doctor.”

Unexplained weight loss

Small weight changes over time are considered normal.

But the charity warns: “If you lose a noticeable amount of weight without trying to, tell your doctor.”

New mole or changes to a mole

Most moles on the body are harmless and remain harmless throughout our lives.

However, the charity says: “Be aware of any new moles or existing moles that change in size, shape or colour, become crusty or bleed or ooze.

“Let your doctor know.”

Mouth or tongue ulcer that won’t heal

When you’re a bit run down, ulcers can occur. But because the lining of the mouth renews itself every two weeks or so, ulcers usually heal within this time.

It advises: “An ulcer that doesn’t heal after three weeks should be reported to your doctor or dentist.”

Very heavy night sweats

Sweating at night can be caused by infections or a side effect of certain medications.

It can also be a symptom of menopause experienced by women.

But it warns: “Very heavy, drenching night sweats can also a sign of cancer and should be checked out by your doctor.”

The eyes can also display cancer symptoms – there are seven signs to watch out for.
