Vlogger Stan Browney kicked off started a new YouTube pushup challenge when he shot a video of himself attempting to do the most pushups possible in 30 seconds. He claimed to break a ‘world record’ he found on YouTube (which was not sanctioned by any governing body, for the record), and issued the #30secondschallenge to his viewers to top the mark.
Browney’s video blew up—and tons of people responded with #30secondchallenge videos of their own. There were a number of people who topped his ‘record’ of 47 pushups—but Browney notes that one guy in particular stood out. who did 50 pushups in 30 seconds with “perfect form”.
“This man literally wipes everyone off the table, including me,” he says, playing a clip of the new pushup champ.
So Browney made it his mission to reclaim his record by, by doing 51 pushups (or more) in 30 seconds. And, of course, he documented his training journey.
By Day 14, he beat the challenge, knocking out 56 pushups in 30 seconds. But he wasn’t happy with his form.
“I think my arms were a little too wide and my core should be a little tighter,” he says.
He sets himself three form guidelines: hands should be shoulder width apart, arms should “lock up” with each rep, and the depth should be equal to a fist height from the ground. He uses a roll of toilet paper for a gauge for how low he can go.
On his next attempt with improved form, Browney gets 50 reps in 30 seconds.
“The pushups were perfect, but I didn’t beat him. I tied him,” he says.
So he gives it another attempt, and hits 53 reps in 30 seconds.
“I don’t think I’ve pushed that hard in my entire life,” he says. “I really had to push my limits and push myself.”
But if a real form check were to happen, Browney’s hips may be a little more depressed than they should be. You can double-check your pushup form and really perfect it with this guide that will make sure you’re in the proper position.
