What do you get when you combine a 400 pound strongman and surfing? A fun, ridiculously large day at the beach.
Eddie Hall, 2017 World’s Strongest Man and vlogger extraordinaire, attempted to give the art of surfing a go when he visited Sydney, Australia to prepare for the Arnold Classic in Melbourne (the event has since been postponed due to coronavirus). Given Hall’s girth, the results were bound to be either something out of Sharknado or the beginnings of a Baywatch montage.
Hall elected to take on the surfing challenge with his brother, who lives in Sydney. The duo met up with an instructor to see if Hall had what it takes to get up on the board and ride the waves, even if this was the first time the instructor had a student even close to being as large as Hall.
Did Hall expect to hang ten immediately? Well, not exactly. “I have high hopes… of getting eaten by a shark,” he joked to the camera. But his biggest concern? Whether he would be able to get on the surfboard at all, as most boards are not made to accommodate someone of that size. None of that mattered to Hall though. “I’m determined to stand up and surf,” he proudly claimed to the camera.
With a GoPro attached to his surfboard and some instructions at hand (“The bigger the wave is, the more it’s going to help you to stand up,”) Hall took the challenge and tried to stand up on the board multiple times. But after falling in the water one time too many, he concluded that his weight was not proportional to the board, making it hard to get any momentum going. “I’m just too heavy,” Hall sadly told the camera. “The board’s just sinking.”
One question remains—did Hall actually enjoy his attempt to ride the waves? “Well, that was an enjoyable experience,” he told his instructor. “I never thought a 400-pound strongman could stand on a surfboard, and even to do that is like an achievement in itself.”
