Hafthor Bjornsson, a.k.a. The Mountain a.k.a. Thor, has undergone a staggering physical transformation over the last year. After winning his 10th consecutive Iceland’s Strongest Man competition in August 2020, he officially retired as a strongman in order to focus on refocusing his training around boxing. Since then, he has drastically leaned down his formerly hulking physique, losing 110 pounds and shredding his abs while committing to a grueling physical regimen designed to improve his speed, mobility, and endurance.
Bjornsson has kept his fans apprised of his progress every step of the way, and recently celebrated how far he has come with a shirtless selfie that shows in no uncertain terms the results of his hard work. “Training done!” He wrote on Instagram. “Hard work pays off! I constantly keep proving that to myself! Set yourself goals and go after them!”
The former Game of Thrones star’s journey from strongman to boxer was, for much of its duration, leading to a very specific endgame: a fight between Bjornsson and his longtime rival Eddie Hall, who has also pivoted to boxing in the last two years. However, Hall was forced to bow out of the long-awaited, much-hyped “World’s Heaviest Fight” last month, after suffering an injury during his training which led to a detached bicep.
Instead, Bjornsson will face off against champion arm wrestler Devon Larratt on September 18. It won’t be quite the grudge match that fans were expecting—Bjornsson and Larratt are actually on pretty friendly terms—but if nothing else, it will be interesting to see Bjornsson use everything he has learned over the last year in the ring.
