There is famously no love lost between UFC powerhouses Conor McGregor and Khabib Nurmagomedov. The two fighters have repeatedly clashed both in and out of the octagon over the last few years, although Nurmagomedov has a habit of trouncing McGregor when it counts.
In a recent interview on the Hotboxin’ With Mike Tyson podcast, Nurmagomedov spoke about his and McGregor’s respective philosophies and ways of approaching a fight, and was asked what he thinks his former opponent might be “missing” in his life. He gave a surprisingly measured response, and stated he believes that McGregor’s ego is being massaged by the wrong people.
“When you become rich, when you become famous, some people, they lose real people around him,” he said. “Because real people who love you, they’re going to tell you the truth. But fake people, they alway say ‘oh, you’re good, you’re good, you’re good.’ They never say to him nothing, because they don’t want to upset you, and they know they’re going to lose this comfortable thing.”
“But real people, they don’t care about this,” he continued. “They was with you before you became famous and rich, and they don’t care about your money, they don’t care about your fame, they just love you. And when they say to you truth, you don’t like this, because of ego. And I think he loses a lot of people around him. This is just my opinion. I don’t think he has people who was with him before he became a champion. Everybody needs someone who reminds you, hey, you’re doing this, this is good, this is bad.”
Whether or not McGregor has been seduced by “yes men” is unclear, although the controversial has faced widespread criticism for his approach to the sport, with several of his peers taking to social media to describe his recent broken leg as “karma.”
McGregor, for his part, is unfazed by any and all critiques of his larger-than-life fighting persona, and recently shared a video from his recovery showing himself doing weighted pullups from his wheelchair. “Let nothing stop you!” He said.
