CrossFit Great Rich Froning Crushed an Off-Road Triathlon

It may be post-season for CrossFit, but Rich Froning isn’t exactly taking days off from competitions.

He recently participated in the MOTUS Duck River Off-Road Triathlon in Cullman, Alabama, and called it “one of the hardest things I’ve ever done.” The four-time Fittest Man on Earth shared footage from the race in a new YouTube video.

The video starts with a mountain biking session the day before the big race at Noccalula Falls, which he recently shared on Instagram was a “new obsession”.

“I fell twice because I couldn’t get out of my clips,” he says after the riding sesh.

And the next day is race day. Froning shares that he only got 5 hours and 23 minutes of sleep, but he says he feels like he got more than that. He and his team head to the race, which consists of a 500 meter open water swim, an 18 mile mountain bike ride, and a 3.5 mile run. Froning is one of the first competitors out of the water after the swim, and quickly transitions to his bike and hits the trails. Finally, he hits the run. Froning finishes in third place, earning a spot on the podium, with a final time of 2:43:14.

“Full quad cramp. I had to stop and just start punching my quad,” says Froning. “That was one of the hardest things I’ve ever done.”

He refuels with some Cherry Coke post-race, and talks with the other competitors.

“I’ve never been happier to get third (place) in my life,” he says.

He looks at his stats on his WHOOP strap, which came out to: 2,714 calories burned, an average heart rate of 169 bpm, and a max heart rate of 208 bpm. He also learned that he spent 36 minutes at 90 to 100 percent of his maximum heart rate—a tough day out for a tough guy.
