Actor, comic and TV personality Joel McHale has had a lot of gigs, including pulling acerbic hosting duty on everything from The Soup to The Joel McHale Show to, most recently, the reunion episode of docuseries Tiger King, and bringing his unique brand of douchey-but-not-too-much charm to movies like Happily, Adult Beginners and Assassination Nation. But to many, he is still best known for playing the lead role of Jeff Winger in the cult comedy series Community. And just like Jeff Winger, McHale is all about taking care of himself—and is not above showing off his body a little bit for attention from time to time.
In a new video on his Instagram page, the 49-year-old actor offers a brief glimpse of his chest workout at Vashon Athletic Club, churning out a set of 7 reps on the bench press. “Most of my workout is taunting my friend Boyd, but then I like to cool down by basking in the approval of people on Instagram,” he wrote in the caption, jokingly adding the hashtag “#midlifecrisis”.
A number of McHale’s famous friends were suitably impressed, cheering him on in the comments. “Former University of Washington footballer still gettin it in!” said comedian Arsenio Hall, referring to McHale’s two years as tight end with the Huskies. “Bazooka Joe is gettin’ swole!” added his Happily co-star Breckin Meyer.
Actor Jonathan Sadowski from Netflix’s Sex/Life, however, was unimpressed, remarking that he thought McHale could have easily kept going to turn those 7 reps into a nice even 10. “You had 3 more reps in you,” he said.
