Britain’s favourite dish is so calorific, dieters would need to run a half marathon to burn it all off, it has been revealed.

Chicken tikka masala with pilau rice and a poppadom has 1,389 calories and topped the table.

Average runners who typically burn 700 calories an hour would take around two hours to complete a half marathon of 13.1 miles (21km).

The calorie counts of the UK’s top ten favourite dishes and the exercise needed to burn them off were calculated by Forza Supplements.

It would require those who eat it to cycle for almost two hours, covering 22.5 miles, to burn it off. Cycling burns 604 calories an hour.

A roast dinner comes in third place at 1,027 calories – meaning it would take 150 minutes swimming to burn it off (413 calories an hour).

Pepperoni pizza with 1,992 calories is fourth place. It would require an exhausting three hours 20 mins session of weights and cardio-vascular exercise in the gym (590 calories an hour) to burn it off.

And sausages and mash potato with 1,172 calories came in fifth – meaning men could burn it off in six hours having sex, or eight hours for women. 

Research shows men burn 200 calories an hour during intercourse and women lose just 138 an hour.

A full English breakfast in sixth place has 919 calories and you will need to play a full 80-minute game of rugby to sweat it off (614 calories an hour).

Seventh-placed Shepherd’s pie and vegetables has 936 calories – a 90-minute game of football expends the same number of calories.

Two hours of tennis burns the same number of calories eating the eighth most popular dish, lamb hotpot with 993 calories.

Steak and kidney pie, chips and peas in ninth place is 669 calories – equivalent to two hours of pilates.

The tenth most popular dish, spaghetti bolognese with parmesan cheese, has 805 calories – what you burn during three hours of downhill ski-ing.

‘Most people don’t want to exercise to this level when they enjoy a curry with their friends on a Friday night. 

‘They are looking for healthy ways to lose more weight more quickly which is driving a boom in the sales of dietary supplements.’
