Earlier this year, Evan Zhang from the Your Average Gent channel on YouTube took on a 30-day challenge where he performed 300 pushups every single day, and reported feeling stronger. In his most recent video, Zhang throws himself into a new 30-day, 300-rep challenge with another staple bodyweight exercise: this time around, he’s doing air squats in an attempt to grow his quads.
“Since I haven’t really seriously trained my quads for a really long time, I’m going to take it slow,” he says. “I will be doing sets of 20 with full range of motion, and spreading my sets throughout the day.”
The video then cuts to a time-lapse of Zhang churning out his reps for 30 days, before getting to the results. At the start of the challenge, his quads measured 50cm (around 19.7 inches). After 30 days and 9,000 squats, they have grown by 2.5cm; just over an inch.
“This 30-day challenge is definitely a tough one,” says Zhang. “Especially at the start… My body is really trying to get used to the insane amount of volume. In the very first week my quads were constantly burning, they were super sore every single day.” However, he adds that towards the end of the challenge his body did start to adjust to the non-stop reps and lack of recovery time, especially over the final 10 days, when he was able to do sets of 30 at a time rather than 20.
“I’ve got to say, this is probably one of the most mentally and physically draining 30-day challenges I’ve ever done,” he says. “Probably because the leg muscles are the largest muscle group in the body.”
