Watch Simone Biles Challenge Her Boyfriend Jonathan Owens to a Rope Climbing Contest

Whether she’s pulling off unprecedentedly difficult and dangerous moves in her routines, or showing off her core strength and flexibility on social media, Olympic artistic gymnast Simone Biles is consistently pushing herself and raising the bar. And it looks like that competitive, driven nature extends to her personal life too, as seen in the trailer for the new documentary Simone vs. Herself.

In a short clip from the upcoming series, due to start streaming on Facebook Watch on June 15, Biles walks into a gymnastics gym with her boyfriend, Houston Texans safety Jonathan Owens, and challenges him to a rope climbing race. While the footage only lasts a few seconds, Owens definitely appears to be lagging behind, and it looks like Biles once again emerges triumphant, proving that it takes more than sheer strength to dominate in this field.

“I had about three fourths of the way,” says Owens. “I just burned out.”

The series will also touch on one of the biggest upheavals in Biles’ career to date; the cancelation of the 2020 Summer Games in Tokyo due to Covid. “I never imagined the Olympics having to be postponed,” she says in the trailer. “Having to come back, am I going to be just as good? Can I do it again?”

Last year, Biles shared with Men’s Health some of the self-care tactics she adopted during the pandemic to help her cope with all of her newfound downtime during the pandemic. They included getting involved in activism, spending time with her family, keeping up with her training—and the occasional well-earned glass of wine.
