The Rock Just Dropped New Gear Inspired by His Football Career

Dwayne ‘The Rock’ Johnson has created a persona that has helped him to become the highest-paid actor in the world, an entrepreneur, and one of the biggest names in the fitness world—but before all that, he was a football player with NFL dreams. He was a highly sought-after recruit coming out of high school and played for the powerhouse University of Miami teams from 1990 to 1994 as a backup, then played briefly in the Canadian Football League before being cut. He’s still connected to the sport, from movies like The Gridiron Gang to the HBO series Ballers and his semi-biographical Young Rock show. Johnson also owns the XFL, which is eying a 2022 season to return to the gridiron.

Johnson’s latest collection from his Project Rock Under Armour apparel line pays homage to that formative experience. The Football Pack features training gear like shorts, and tank tops, and a hoodie, along with a special edition pair of football cleats sporting Johnson’s Miami number, 94, and his Brahma Bull logo. Reps from Under Armour couldn’t confirm if any sponsored athletes or collegiate programs would be sporting the cleats during this upcoming season.

In an Instagram post, Johnson cites his time on the gridiron as being essential to his future success—but not in the way you might expect. He says needed to fail in football to find his greater success in pro wrestling and entertainment.

“Because of failure, my NFL dreams never came true,” he wrote. “Because of failure, I am the hardest worker in the room. And because of failure, I’ve learned that the hard work will always begin and end, with me.”

He revealed that the video for the collection (and its color palate) brings him full circle; the footage was captured at McKinley High School in Honolulu, Hawaii, on the field and weight room where he went to school. “Sometimes it’s the dreams that don’t come true, that give us life’s greatest lessons,” he wrote.

The Project Rock Football pack is available now on Under Armour’s website.
