K-Pop Star Shownu Just Used Matte Brown Eye Shadow in the Most Genius Way

For the new music video "Shoot Out," which dropped today, Korean boy group Monsta X's makeup artists went all in. Every single second spotlights seriously impressive eye makeup that was anything but subtle. Not to name any names, but at least one member of a K-pop boy group typically wears only base makeup, but Monsta X didn't let a single lid go untouched by dramatic makeup. Their beauty team experimented with shapes, shades, and finishes of eye shadow, showing us new ways to work our go-to palettes this fall.

Most of Monsta X also changed up their hair color halfway through the music video. Wonho, in particular, went from black to a light auburn shade. Shownu, on the other hand, officially debuted his red hair while Hyungwon switched up from platinum blonde to smoky brown. Kihyun also darkened his brown hair to a raven hue. However, Minhyuk kept his hair pink, I.M stayed gray, and Jooheon was true to tangerine the whole time.

Hair aside, I rounded up nine of the best eye makeup moments from Monsta X's "Shoot Out" music video. I dare you to not screenshot all of them for future reference.

1. Jooheon's Bold Burgundy Underliner

The rapper set the overall tone for "Shoot Out" three seconds in with a dangerously fierce look, and I'm not just referring to his Hannibal Lector-like muzzle. Jooheon coordinated his rich, red shadow swept under his eyes with his colored contacts. A sheer wash of the same color was also blended all over his top lids. You can recreate the look by packing on the deep red and brown shades from the Huda Beauty Rose Gold Remastered Eyeshadow Palette, which recently won a Best of Beauty Award.

2. Shownu's Fishtail Shadow

Matte taupe shadow usually goes untouched in my palettes, but Shownu just convinced me that I can use it to create a look that is neither basic nor neutral. His makeup artist created flicks of shadow from the outer corners of Shownu's top and bottom lids to create a fun fishtail shape. I'm sure a fine-tipped brush like the Sigma Beauty E30 Pencil Brush came in handy for the unexpectedly stunning look.

3. Wonho's Copper Eye Shadow

"Shoot Out" further proved that Monsta X wears glitter better than any other guys I know. I knew this the second I sat down with them backstage at a stop on their The Connect world tour, but this music video just confirmed it. If I ever had to defend this statement in court, Wonho's reflective copper lids would be exhibit A. They looked shiner than a penny fresh from the mint.

4. Hyungwon's Tightliner

For those that aren't the most confident in their eye shadow skills, let Hyungwon give you some sultry fall makeup inspiration. His makeup artist paired the champagne shadow, which was brushed all around his eyes, with black tightliner. A bronze liner was also drawn right below it to accentuate to Hyungwon's sky-blue eyes.

5. I.M's Bad Boy Realness

If James Dean went through an emo phase, you'd have I.M during one of his solo scenes in "Shoot Out." With his steely smoky eyes, brow piercing, and wrist tattoo, all he needs is a motorcycle to fulfill the fantasy. His makeup artist blended an ashy gray shadow all the way up to I.M's brows then added definition to his eyes with a smudgy black liner along his lash lines. I'm guessing an eggplant tinted lip balm like the Origins Blooming Sheer Lip Balm in Night Blossom was swiped onto his lips, too.

6. Minhyuk's Dusty Rose Eyes

Minhyuk's makeup artist seemed to copy-and-paste his hair color into an eye shadow for his monochromatic look. A shimmery dusty ruse hue that perfectly matched his hair was added to his lids below his creases and brought down only to the outer corners of his lower lids for a colorful smoky effect.

7. Kihyun's Diffused, Single-Shade Shadow

Instead of blending several hues of gray onto Kihyun's lids for a classic smoky eye, his makeup artist focused a charcoal shade on the outer corners of his lids and softly diffused its intensity toward the center. Even if you own only one eye shadow, no matter what color it may be, you can try out this look. Just be sure to lay the pigment onto the outer corners of your eyes with a dense brush like the M.A.C. 242 Synthetic Shader Brush. Then, blended it inward with a fluffy one like the Moda Metallics Crease brush. (Both are Best of Beauty Award Winners, by the way.)

8. Wonho's Glittery Gray Shadow

And here's exhibit B for my Monsta-X-defeating-the-guys-in-glitter game argument. Wonho's makeup artist gave his smoldering eye makeup a glitzy twist with a twinkling shade of graphite shadow. Although I'm not sure what shade was used, the Make Up For Ever Artist Color Eye Shadow in ME-108 Steel (an Allure-editor favorite) has the same sparkly gray vibe.

9. Minhyuk's Magenta Liner

Minhyuk brought two different pink-toned eye makeup looks to "Shoot Out," and I refuse to pick a favorite. For this one, a hot pink liner like the Marc Jacobs Beauty Highliner Gel Eye Crayon Eyeliner in (Pop)ular 49 was etched along his lash lines. Pink eyeliner may be slightly scary as it seems like it would make you look like you have pink eye, but Minhyuk shows that with glowy skin and a similarly hot pink lip tint, it hardly looks sickly.
