Fitness YouTubers are finding ever-more creative ways to kill time in quarantine, from seeing how long they can tread water for, to cranking out thousands of pushups. Irish vlogger Glen Gillen recently posted his own contribution; a video diary of his attempt to do 10,000 pushups in 24 hours.
We kind of have to take Gillen’s word for it, as the video isn’t actually 24 hours long, but rather a composite of time-lapses which track his progress over the day and night. He films the first 1,000 reps to prove that he’s able to do this much, completing them in 50 sets of 20 reps. He achieves this in 49 minutes. “It’s not too hard, it’s just boring,” he says. “It’s long and boring… If you try this, the first 1,000 is the hardest. I don’t know how it works like that.”
“That was a lot easier on the grass, man,” he says, after completing his second round of 1,000 reps outside. “Although I can barely breathe.” As the fatigue starts to set in, however, it takes longer and longer for Gillen to complete his sets, with his time going up from 49 minutes to 63 to 75.
“You don’t understand the pain my body’s in right now,” Gillen says in the evening, after completing his 7,000th pushup. “My elbows are sore, my triceps are sore, my chest is numb, so if I can, I’m gonna get another set in.” He then gets up early the next morning to tackle the final 2,000 reps before his cutoff point of 10 a.m.
“I did it, with 13 minutes to spare,” he concludes. “That is honestly one of the hardest things I have self-willingly signed up for… The aftermath of 10,000 pushups is, in fact, a sore chest, sore elbows, sore shoulders, sore wrists. I have sore abs as well. But you most certainly get one of the biggest pumps of your life.”
