Much like seagulls to hot chips, Meghan Markle is a magnet for mum shamers.
First, it was the way she cradled her baby bump during pregnancy that had trolls up in arms. Then, they came for her body language at Archie’s first photo call (which, FYI, was actually totally normal). Now, they’re taking aim at her technique for carrying the two-month-old. *sighs in disbelief.*
It all started earlier this week when Megs attended Prince Harry’s polo match against his bro Prince William. As the royal couple have been notoriously private about life with a newborn, the Internet was pretty excited to see pics of the tot’s first public outing. That’s when things turned sour…
Despite many cute pics of the new mum kissing and caressing her son, critics began accusing the 37-year-old of handling him carelessly.
“Meghan looks like she’s about to drop him,” one user wrote on Instagram. “You can tell she doesn’t even take care of her own kid,” added another. “What kind of mother holds their baby like that.”
Over on Twitter, one person aired their extremely detailed (read: totally cruel) thoughts on the matter:
Thankfully, many parents leapt to Meghan’s defence. The positive comments included: “She’s a brand new mother. Stop the damn mum shaming! Jesus!” And, “There are mums out there who didn’t know how to pick [up] their baby for months either, it’s a process so give her a break.”
Speaking with Fabulous Digital, maternity nurse Lisa Clegg (aka, the author of The Blissful Baby Expert concurred.
“I personally don’t see any issues with the way Meghan is holding baby Archie,” she said. “To me, her body language looks like she’s holding him in a very protective way, by supporting his bottom and the top of his back, so she’s ready to catch that inevitable head flip they sometimes do, until they learn better head and neck control.”
Honestly, with the whole world scrutinising her every move, is it really that surprising that Meghan looks a little awkward? It’s time to give it a rest, haters.
