Multiple Sclerosis Drug Gilenya May Cause Disabling Effects When Stopped, FDA Warns

According to the FDA, discontinuing Gilenya can result in severe worsening of MS that could lead to disability. Are you currently taking Gilenya? Here’s what you need to know.

What could happen if I stop taking Gilenya?

According to the FDA, stopping Gilenya can cause MS symptoms to worsen, and could lead to disabilities like the inability to walk.

To date, there have been 35 reported cases in which patients stopped taking Gilenya and their MS symptoms worsened to the point of disability. While the disability reversed for six of those 35 patients, the majority have seen little to no recovery.

The FDA has added this new warning to the prescribing information section of the Gilenya drug label and the patient medication guide.

Talk to your doctor before you discontinue taking Gilenya. If you’ve already stopped taking the drug and experience new or worsened symptoms of MS, seek medical attention immediately.

Does Gilenya have any other safety risks?

Unfortunately, yes. Since its approval, the FDA has issued three official warning announcements about Gilenya. Gilenya may be linked to an increased risk for a rare brain infection, cardiovascular problems (like a heart attack) and sudden death.
